Biography
A native of Jeannette, Pennsylvania, Tim Winfield began playing trumpet at an early age, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He is currently principal trumpet of the Butler Symphony Orchestra, first trumpet with the W.D. Packard Band, and has been a tenured member of the Billings Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Winfield has also played with the Pittsburgh Opera, Canton Symphony Orchestra, Erie Chamber Orchestra, Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Boulder Symphony Orchestra, Steamboat Springs Orchestra, South Florida Symphony Orchestra, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Corona Symphony, Hangar Theater, and Lake Dillon Theater. As an active freelance musician, he has worked with John Williams, Barry Manilow, The Hitmen, Jack Black, Elizaveta, Silva Hakobyan, and Musical Theatre West.

Tim Winfield, has been assistant professor of music at Westminster College since 2014. He is the director of the Westminster College jazz ensemble, and teaches private trumpet, trumpet ensemble, brass chamber music, brass pedagogy, general music methods, introduction to classic jazz, introduction to western music, and band practicum.
As a trumpet soloist, Tim Winfield has been featured with the Westminster College Wind Ensemble, Westminster College Symphony Orchestra, and the Mercer Community Band. He has also been featured in the New Works Recital at the 2017 and 2018 International Trumpet Guild Conferences, and the 2018 College Music Society National Conference in Vancouver, Canada. At these conferences, he performed two works which he commissioned, including Daniel Perttu’s Torngat and Joshua Hobbs's Keystone Landscapes.

Dr. Winfield is an avid chamber musician, actively working with the Westminster College Faculty Brass Quintet, Northwest Passage Trumpet Trio, and previously with the Vista Brass Quintet in Los Angeles, CA. The Northwest Passage Trumpet Trio performed a piece they commissioned at the 2019 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Miami, FL. During his tenure with Vista Brass Quintet, the group was in the final round of several competitions including the Coleman Chamber Competition and the Chicago Brass Festival Ensemble Competition. The Vista Brass Quintet also worked to promote youth music education through workshops with the USC Thornton Outreach Program and the Palos Verdes Library Classical Music Series.

As a music educator, Tim Winfield taught in the public schools of Pennsylvania, Colorado, and California. Much of his teaching in California was among diverse populations in low socioeconomic areas. In California he has taught with Education Through Music – Los Angeles and was a musicianship and brass specialist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s flagship El Sistema program, Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA). He has also maintained an active private trumpet studio throughout Pennsylvania, New York, Colorado, and California.
Tim Winfield earned his undergraduate degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in music education, then went on to earn his Master of Music in trumpet performance at Ithaca College. While at Ithaca, he taught trumpet minor students, trumpet methods class, and brass methods class to undergraduate music education majors. He then went on to complete his Doctorate of Musical Arts in trumpet performance from the University of Southern California. While Tim’s focus at USC was trumpet performance, he did extensive work in the fields of music education, instrumental conducting, and jazz studies. His principal trumpet teachers include Donald Green, Boyde Hood, John Fumo, D. Kim Dunnick, Frank Campos, Kevin Eisensmith, Vince Monteleone, and Bill Pfund.
